click here to see all the silly rings i belong to

Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 - 11:01 a.m.

i always wondered if anyone wondered about this stuff. i feel silly putting it in my zine so i think i'll put it here:

Your Name:alex paradox wrekk (my real name is rather embarassing

zine title:Brainscan, i'm a wrekk, curious constellation, and soon:stolen sharpie revolution

Price (ppd):$1-2

address:p.o. box 14332 portland, oregon 97293

e-mail: brainscanzine@ureach.com

1.What is your zine called and why did you name it that? brainscan had to do with my family and their brain problems. my grandfather lived through brain surgery in the late 50's. my grandmother had a small tumor and when ever anyone starts doing odd things like putting their purse in the dryer or forgets stuff a lot someone will say "brainscan!brainscan!" it's a family joke. i'm a wrekk is kinda obvious. "alex is a wrekk...cause she is a wreck"

2. How long have you been self-publishing? i started putting my first zine together when i was in highschool in 94 but it didn't come out till 95. it was called "fun in a bucket" i did it with my sister. she later changed the name to "touched by an anvil"

3. What is the focus of your zine? i guess it is a perzine about hte way i see life and hte stuff that happens to me or has happened to me including travel and smashed hearts.

4. Why do you do a zine? i need an outlet somewhere. i write and i fill up these notebooks and i have these beautiful typewriters that should get used for something. i also like all the people i meet .

5. What are some of your pet peeves about zines? unequal trades (including those people who put a few loose pages of poetry in an envelope with no note or anything... i really don't get that),the gluestick goo that gets stuck to your fingers when doing a paste up...i also love it at the same time. i hate having to carry home insane amounts of copies on my bike, it makes my back hurt. postage is super expensive for how much i have been sendign lately.

6. Has being on the internet helped, hurt or not made difference to your zine and why? i think it has helped. i do like real tree killing paper more than internet stuff that doesn't really exist but i have met some awesoem people this way.

7. How do you pay for your zine? i steal a large amount of copies by way of a stolen kinko's key that hides in my backpack. money people send pays for postage and the copies that get paid for.

8. What are some scams you've used that you can hip us to (copy, printshop, postal etc.)steal your own copy key, walk out, high powered magnets reset the key. you east coast kids have those cards. i hear there is a method of recharging them for free it has to do with unplugging the machine i'm not exactly sure. tell them the copies were double sided takes some money off. gluing stamps and reclaiming stamps works well. using media mail is good as well as "M bag" for h heavy overseas orders. there are probably more that i forget at the moment.

9. What do you do with all the old zines you've read? we have a LARGE collection on a rack in our living room. the super special ones that i love a lot are on the book shelf in my room.

10. how do you distribute your zine? stores in portland and a few otehr places and a lot of mail order and distros.

11. reliable distros /stores: reading frenzy and q is for choir (portland), starfiend distro, moon rocket, grrrl style, independent thought brigade, yellow cape revolution, MAD people, the gilman stoar, youth in revolt, echo and a ton of others.

12. shit ones. quimby's still owes me a bunch of money but i live on the other side of hte country from the store. i wouldn't call them shit though.

13. best 5 zines: three a.m., red hooded sweatshirt, tight pants!, doris, touched by an anvil

14. worst 5 zines: Skratch,

15. what do you look for in a zine? good writing mixed with good layout, easy to read, good editing. nice contrast.

16. How can someone get a copy of your zine? write me a nice letter or send me money or stamps an e-mail to set up a trade or sending a good trade to the post box. a full post box makes my hearts smile.-alex

***MICROCOSM PUBLISHING***we make 1" buttons, stickers, shirts, and patches. we also distro recrods, books, zines and more. this is how joe and i make a living
