onramp year two 2002 |
Friday, Nov. 02, 2001 - 3:44 p.m. i took the bus home at 5am and when i got here joe was just getting up and turning off the computer after falling asleep on the couch watching a movie. i scared the shit out of his apparaently. i saw SLC punk for the second time last night with korinna while we were waiting for it to get late to go to kinko's. it is odd. i spent my "formulative years" (10-22) in salt lake city, utah. i first saw SLC punk after i had moved to portland and was distracted by places that i used to hang out, the little details and discrepencies and finding people i knew in the extras. i thought the movie was culture specific to salt lake. i didn't think anyone else would relate to it. my sister saw it in a theater in eugene, oregon and found her self to be the only one laughing at some points. so much of it rings true;the violence, the beer runs, the everyone having to kind of stick together against red necks and mormons. it is kind of disturbing. the ending really bothered me too. in the end he sells out. that sucks. it is a dumb idea to me, at my age, to associate with a punk movie when the protagonist sell out in the end when he is younger than me. so i have been seeing lots of younger kids online talking about how they identify with it. even making jokes about going to salt lake. as if it has some relavence or something. it was (and is for the most part still is) an isolated pocket with a very strange culture. after traveling and meeting people in other states and countries i thought it was even more odd that people outside of utah could relate. i watched it again last night and i guess i can see how kids associate with it as a story about punk kids growing up. it is just odd to be able to look at what is probably my "home town" with this 2 1/2 years and 1000 miles of distance about a movie that was supposed to be in 1985. if any one has any other things that i missed please let me know i'd be interested is hearing opinions from other people. korinna and i talked about it and she helped shed a little light. we both thought it was silly how people think of salt lake as this fantasy land of punk rock after watching that movie. if you happen to be in the SLC punk diaryring. i'd like to hear what you think.-alex ***MICROCOSM PUBLISHING***we make 1" buttons, stickers, shirts, and patches. we also distro recrods, books, zines and more. this is how joe and i make a living
